Throughout the year, we sometimes struggle to find meaningful gifts for those we love the most. This year consider giving the gift of LASIK eye surgery to the grad or dad in your life! A recent graduate who is about to embark on a college journey or new career would surely appreciate the gift of perfect vision before they take those exciting next steps. And what better way to show Dad you care than by helping him see more clearly—without glasses and contacts. If you’re looking for a LASIK provider in Olathe or Leawood, look no further than Grin Eye Care.

Benefits of LASIK

LASIK surgery offers our patients the ability to clearly see the world around them without the hassle of contacts or glasses. Contacts require frequent cleaning, daily maintenance, and ongoing costs. Additionally, contacts are linked to many eye infections, which can range from minor irritations to permanent vision damage. Glasses can also be expensive when you consider the continued cost of repair and replacement or adjustment. They can also require frequent cleaning and upkeep—and for the style-conscious among us, new frames are often needed to better suit your current style.

LASIK offers a simple solution to correct your vision problems, and most patients have little to no discomfort and begin seeing better almost immediately after the procedure. Imagine giving your loved ones the gift of great eyesight—without any hassle!

While vision-correction surgery like LASIK and Refractive Lens Exchange may not be ideal for every patient, the research and science continue to grow. The number of potential candidates grows every year, so even if that new graduate or dad has looked into LASIK in the past, they may be the perfect candidate today.

How LASIK Works

LASIK is an acronym for “Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis.” The procedure utilizes a laser in order to reshape the cornea. The cornea is responsible for properly allowing light and images to pass through the eye and be interpreted into what we see by the brain. If the cornea is misshapen or damaged, it can alter the image that comes through. This often makes objects appear blurry or distorted. LASIK surgery restores the proper shape of the cornea, allowing the images to pass through without any issues. This means that patients can see clearly without the assistance of corrective lenses. They can wear regular sunglasses, swim, and wake up every morning to clear vision.

The LASIK Procedure

The LASIK procedure is conducted by making a small incision in the tissue that covers the cornea, creating a small flap. This is completed by using the newest laser technology available—often referred to as Bladeless LASIK or iLASIK. Once the laser creates the corneal flap, the doctor can access the cornea and use a laser to remove, or “ablate” the cells of the cornea in microscopic increments until the proper shape is achieved. Nearsighted individuals usually need to have the cornea flattened, while the correction for farsightedness is to create a steeper angle. Astigmatism can also be corrected by smoothing the shape of the cornea to a more natural curve.

Once the proper shape has been achieved, the corneal flap is closed and sealed, and the eye quickly beings to heal. Patients do not need to be sedated for the surgery and our doctors will only use a topical anesthetic on the eye. No stitches or bandages are required in the healing process.

The surgery takes about 15-30 minutes to complete and is considered an outpatient treatment.

Immediately following the procedure, your LASIK provider will allow the patient to rest and be monitored. It is normal to feel some mild burning or itching. Shortly after, patients can be driven home by somebody else. Patients cannot drive until the doctor has cleared them the following day to ensure that their vision meets the legal standard to drive without corrective lenses.

Patients can experience some haziness or blurring, but that has usually resolved by the following morning. While most people experience an immediate improvement in their eyesight, final results can take a few days or weeks to be completely realized.
