The month of February has been designated as Macular Degeneration Awareness Month. Our doctors & staff at Grin Eye Care are committed to making sure our patients are well-informed on all things related to ocular health, including important information about Macular Degeneration. Here some helpful facts that you may not know about Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD):

  1. AMD is the leading cause of vision loss among people over the age of 65.
  2. AMD affects 1 in 8 people over the age of 60.
  3. AMD is more common than glaucoma.
  4. Early detection is key when it comes to managing AMD, which is why it is so important to always schedule your annual eye exam.
  5. There is no treatment for early AMD.
  6. Family history is an important factor with AMD because it is a genetic disease.
  7. Smoking cigarettes is the largest modifiable risk factor for developing AMD. Many studies have shown that smokers have double the risk of developing AMD compared to non-smokers.
  8. The early stages of AMD often do not cause any symptoms; another reason why annual comprehensive eye exams are crucial.
  9. Eating a healthy diet is key! Foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin C & E and beta-carotene can help reduce the risk of AMD. Fruits, veggies, walnuts and fatty fish (such as salmon) are all great sources of these nutrients.
  10. AMD affects that part of the retina called the macula, which is responsible for our sharp, clear central vision. Early symptoms of damage include distorted and blurred central vision.
