Astronaut John Phillips always prided himself on having excellent uncorrected vision. After spending six months in outer space in 2005, that changed. Phillips has been unable to see clearly without the assistance of glasses for the past 11 years.  Phillips is just one of many astronauts to suffer from visual impairment intracranial pressure syndrome, or VIIP, which causes seemingly permanent changes in the eye and the optic nerve after extended stays in space.  According to a recent Washington Post article, NASA has determined that understanding VIIP is critical to ensuring we can safely send astronauts to Mars. NASA hopes to reach Mars by the 2030s
